The Austin Umpire Association was
formed in 1971 when Austin became an ASA Metro Association in the
Amateur Softball Association (ASA). It was formed with the primary goal
of training and providing umpires for the local City of Austin softball
leagues, invitational ASA sanctioned week-end tournaments, ASA Regional
and ASA National Championships.
Prior to Austin becoming a Metro
Association, the city had been District 19 in the Texas ASA State
Association. In 2002 Metro Austin gave up the Metro status and returned
to the Texas ASA Association becoming District 40.
The original goal of providing umpires for
the Austin Parks and Recreation Department's softball leagues has not
changed as the over 100 local umpires are assigned league games on six
nights per week during the softball seasons, running from February to
December.
